Above is a spectacular view overlooking the Saba Airport from Bogan's Old House in Hellsgate, Saba, Dutch Caribbean, which was recently sold.

Below is The Island View Villa in Upper Hellsgate.

Saban cottages are a wonderful blend of "Heidi" meets the Caribbean, mixing alpine attitude with traditional gingerbread fretwork. Most Saban cottages are white wood or stucco, trimmed out with lovely green or red shutters topped off with red roofs. Once in a special while, a cottage like the Island View Villa is built of indigenous, and stunningly attractive, grey volcanic rock. These are the most fabulous and unique of all the Saban cottages and rather rare. From a practical point of view, they are very low maintenance. From a style point of view, they are just simply gorgeous. They truly deliver Old World Caribbean living. The soft grey rock is a perfect backdrop for the traditional Saban vernacular. The cottage has two gardens. Below is a view of part of the lower garden.

This charming two bedroom stone cottage, located in Upper Hell's Gate, has it all. The red roof, wonderful white fretwork and beautifully appointed Brazilian walnut doors and shutters add lots of style. Built in 1987, the cottage is in immaculate, move in condition. It's a perfect turn key home. You needn't lift a finger. Furnishings include crystal chandeliers, antiques, paintings, art work, fine china and even a car to navigate "The Road!" The interior also features a fully functional stone hearth. Below is a view of the upper Garden.

Large, private tiled terraces afford stunning views. The east facing terrace has unobstructed views of all the easterly islands. The north facing terrace is nestled in a lush tropical garden. All the lawn and terrace furniture is included in the sale. Necessities include two large storage units plus an attached storage/garden room. The new roof was installed in 2003. The house has hurricane shutters and a 20,000 gallon cistern capacity. The house sits on 336 sq/meters of land. Below is a view from the upper garden towards the peak of Mt. Scenery, the highest point on the island.

Don't postpone the joy of living the Old World Caribbean lifestyle. Priced at $654,000 inclusive. Below is a view of the sunrise from the lower terrace.

5 Lots of Land For Sale Below Mountain Road Above the Town of Windwardside

Create your own personal paradise on the charming island of Saba. Imagine yourself nestled in a tropical forest tucked high on a hill overlooking the Caribbean. By day, you overlook the neighboring islands floating like meringue on the sea. Sailboats and ships silently float by in the distance. Clouds cast their shadow on the ocean surface. The water glimmers in the sun. The picturesque little village of Windward Side magically spreads out in front of you...a vision of traditional red and white cottages and old stone walls knitted together by rich tropical greens. As night approaches the sunset dazzles with its rich shades of pink and the twinkling of the village lights continue the landscape of the Old Caribbean lifestyle. It is a wonderful place, set back in time. A place that is perfectly serene, peacefully quite and connected to nature. Below is a view of the 5 lots.

And the most amazing part of this story is that you have the opportunity to create your own Old Caribbean home. Rarely are lots as beautiful as these available in Saba. These lush tropical parcels give you the opportunity to design a home that combines respect for the local vernacular with the ability to create a sustainable architectural design that embraces the surroundings. Five beautiful lots, varying in size from .133 to 1.44 acres, are situated in one of the most gorgeous areas of Saba. They sit at the lower part of Mount Scenery in an elfin forest filled with ancient rainforest trees. The rich, fertile soil is perfect for creating a magical tropical garden to surround your Saba cottage that has been built to suit your needs. The large plot, or a combination of all five plots, is also perfect for a full service "green" boutique hotel if that is your dream. The building sites have been fully inspected by the local government engineer. And while building on a mountainside at 800 ft elevation might be a challenge in another country, it is not in Saba. Remember, this is the island where building materials were hauled up from the wharf by donkeys and manpower before the supposedly un-buildable "Road" was finished in 1951. Below is the view overlooking the town of Windwardside from these lots.

These beautiful plots are the perfect place to apply eco-principals of design and build a home that is one with its environment. Saba is pristine and naturally "green". As a rainforest, it breathes life into the atmosphere every moment of the day. The native Sabans are protective of their natural heritage. The environment is treated as a national treasure. Yet the islanders are practical and find way to maximize their lifestyle while maintaining a consideration for the environment. A complimentary home design would create a perfect balance of comfortable living with consideration for the island's natural beauty. Smart design and eco-materials combined with efficient water conservation methods still allow for a beautiful home. Saba Island Realty is very knowledgeable about sustainable design. They are offering references to eco-architectural designers, eco-material suppliers, furnishings, mechanical engineers, modern technology and financial analysts. You will not be left on your own. Marlena McGrath, principal of Saba Island Realty, is passionate about eco-architecture and sustainable design as well as beautiful interiors and exteriors. She is your guide to the island and understands Saba's balancing act with the surroundings.

Saba is remote, but not out of touch. It is exclusive, but not unattainable. It is the perfect place to revitalize and contemplate. Email: MarlySabaIsland@aol.com for prices.

Pyramid House

Most people in Saba live clustered in charming villages. It's a cozy way to live nestled among your neighbors, favorite restaurants and shops. However, a few very unique people live on the "edge", literally, on properties that are at one with their surroundings. These special places blend into the environment as if they've always been part of the space. Such is the private and exclusive Pyramid House, located on the level near Saba's Organic Garden. The Pyramid House is a sublime, very "Zen" experience. The views of Spring Bay and Mount Scenery are dramatic. A platform sitting on the huge boulder that juts into the ocean allows one to sit and contemplate the moving of the sky from morning to night.

The property's architecture is a unique blend of Saban architecture with white walls and green trim for the guest cottage and stone walls and very attractive "pyramid" structure main house facing the sea. The two structures are well integrated via a float bridge. The two acre grounds are filled with the traditional lichen-covered stonewalls and stairways, courtyards, a relaxing pool overlooking the sea, a yoga platform (can double as an evening cocktail spot) mature gardens and lawns plus a separate Zen garden that allows for contemplation of the Caribbean

Endless design possibilities would transform this large building into a Caribbean holiday home. Located near the beautiful Cottage Club, and surrounded by quaint neighboring Saban cottages this property's relatively large land area has room for private pool and garden. The building has vaulted ceilings, large open space, and solid masonry construction.

Saba is a small Caribbean island located in the Netherlands Antilles, 25 miles south of the island of St. Maarten. Saba is about 5 sq mi (13 sq km) in area, and is about 7 mi in circumference. It is one of the NW Leeward Islands. The rugged island is actually the cone of an extinct volcano rising steeply to 2,800 ft (850 m). Spiral roads winding up through steep cliffs and lush greenery make Saba an unusually scenic island. The chief settlement, called The Bottom, is in the crater of the volcano. Saba was first settled by the Dutch in 1632. Saba is known for its stunning ecology, fabulous diving, and unspoiled beauty and charm. Saba's volcano is called Mt. Scenery and its summit is a tropical rain forest. The surrounding ocean floor offers spectacular SCUBA diving. Saba's uniqueness is its incredible scenic grandeur combined with the warmth and character of its local inhabitants.

The view of Saba above clearly shows the steepness of much of the terrain. Many properties are located on the steep slopes of the mountain high above the ocean between about 600 and 1000 feet in elevation. On the windward side of the island above the airport is an area known as Hell's Gate. On this side of the island the trade winds blow most of the year and keep the tropical climate to a comfortable level and the air free of small insects.

Above is the island from the east looking towards the west at the windward side of the island. The windy road leads from the airport up to Hellsgate and then to Windwardside. Property for sale is located approximately at the red arrow.

Saba Island is located in the northern Netherlands Antilles, in the upper center of this satellite image, labeled in yellow. The large island of St. Martin just to the north can be reached by direct flights from many U.S. and European cities. From there it is a short 15 minute flight by regularly scheduled twin-engine turbo prop aircraft. Below you see an overview of the terrain overlooking the small 1300 foot runway where 15-passenger STOL airplanes deliver you to Saba from St. Martin.

Above is a view of the ridge above the airport which runs to the top of Mt. Scenery. The land behind the ridge is mostly uninhabited for half the circumference of the island due to its rugged terrain, affording a beautiful pristine area for walking and hiking.

Above is another view of Saba Island from the air. Clouds often build up above the island, sometimes enclosing the top. This is the East or windward side of the island. The prevailing tradewinds blow towards this side of the island. When the wind reaches the island it is forced upwards, causing the frequent cloud buildups.

Above is a close up of Saba's airport which Bogan's House overlooks from a height of about 1000 feet. Below is a view of the area above the airport known as Lower Hellsgate, or sometimes Zion's Hill.

The composite artist's map below shows Saba in relation to the six nearby islands of St. Maarten, Anguilla, and St. Barts, which lie to the North-East of Saba, and St. Eustatius, St. Kitts, and Nevis to the South. Saba appears twice in this map, first as the smallest island at the red number 1 shown in approximate proportion to the surrounding islands, and a second time at the red number 2, shown many times enlarged in relation to the surrounding islands.
