WHALE DRUMS & FUNGIPHONES
(metal tongue drums)
Whale drums have become one of my most popular instruments for outdoor and indoor play. These are the Original Whale Drums. The tone is deep, rich and very resonant. Even on cement or turf, you can feel the vibration run up through your body from the ground. These metal tongue drums are made from old repurposed propane tanks, and often show sign of their previous life in the form of dings or pock marks. this only adds to their character and texture under the powder coat finish.

The Fungiphones are a recent cousin of the Whale Drum.
They are made from new propane tank end "seconds", with an old repurposed narrow propane tank as the "stem". They are very similar in sound to the whale drum with, perhaps, slightly more sustain, and the added bell like sound when the rim is struck.

These are 24" Diameter and around 18" high tank drums, made from the smaller household bulk tanks, referred to by those in the trade as "piglets".
The metal isn't quite as thick as the larger tanks, but these metal tongue drums are excellent for preschool, lower elementary age, or any age in a less public setting..

30" Whale Drum

These are 30" Diameter and 24" high, Made from the full size propane tank or "Pig", as called in the trade.
These metal tongue drums are fine for just about any use other than a very busy unsupervised public playground.

These tank drums are made out of the "hot dog" style bulk propane tanks made from between 1/4" and 3/8" thick steel. Quite rugged.

Fungiphones!
These are one of my newer designs!
The playability and the sound quality are much like the Whale Drums, with a little more sustain and the added effect of a bell like tone when struck on the rim. The Tops are made from new "seconds" meant for propane tank tops, and the "stem" is made from old repurposed narrow propane cylinders. The recommendations for size are similar to those stated for the Whale Drums.
